An Investigation of the Chaotic Dripping Faucet

چکیده

The dripping faucet experiment has been performed multiple times since it was proposed by Robert Shaw in 1984 as a system exhibiting chaos. It continues to serve as a relatively simple chaotic system for numerical and experimental analysis. This project seeked to replicate past experiments and find the route to chaos in droplet formation. It was desired to collect enough data to construct a bifurcation diagram in order to predict system behavior at various flow rates. Additionally, simulations were performed by modeling the water droplet as a harmonic oscillator. Although there were no novel findings in this project, there were many significant experimental improvements that can aid others trying to perform the experiment.

The dripping faucet revisited.

High accuracy experimental results on the nonlinear dynamical behaviour of a dripping faucet are presented. The distribution functions for droplet sizes and drip intervals together with return maps are studied for various dripping rates. Increasing this control parameter, chaotic behaviour is obtained and discussed. (c) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Hydro - dynamical models for the chaotic dripping faucet

We give a hydrodynamical explanation for the chaotic behaviour of a dripping faucet using the results of the stability analysis of a static pendant drop and a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the complete dynamics. We find that the only relevant modes are the two classical normal forms associated with a saddle– node–Andronov bifurcation and a Shilnikov homoclinic bifurcation. This allow...

The Chaotic Dripping Faucet: Investigation of Chaotic Behavior in Water Droplet Formation

The dripping faucet experiment seeks to provide a simple example of a system that exhibits predictable dynamics that transition to an unpredictable, chaotic behavior under certain conditions. The time between water drops falling from a nozzle, is measured with a straightforward experimental setup using a photodiode and a laser. The period, or time between falling drops, is dependent on the flow...

Drip Drip ’Til You Drop: An Investigation of Dripping Faucet Dynamics

In this paper, we investigate the dripping faucet as an example of a chaotic system. Using an improved mass-spring model, we simulate the dynamics qualitatively, reproducing all the major behaviors seen in experimental systems and the literature. Experimentally, we are able to reproduce one, two, and three-period motion, as well as chaos, closely matching the literature. Our major insights were...

The chaotic dripping faucet

We propose a simple model for the chaotic dripping of a faucet in terms of a return map constructed by analyzing the stability of a pendant drop. The return map couples two classical normal forms, an Andronov saddle-node bifurcation, and a Shilnikov homoclinic bifurcation. The former corresponds to the initiation of the instability when the drop volume exceed a critical value set by the balance...
